GMC has started taking steps to ease traffic congestion

The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has started taking steps to ease traffic congestion by initiating the zoning of major streets.
The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, has laid down clear guidelines on the zoning of streets and protecting the livelihood of the vendors.Municipal Commissioner Srikesh, who convened a meeting of the street vendors, the traffic police, and the town planning personnel, said that the city was divided into three zones – Green, Amber, and Red.
Vendors would be allowed to set up mobile push-carts at 45 spots in the Green zone and 34 spots in the Amber zone, he said.The GMC has placed 17 roads in the Red zone as they carry peak traffic. Street vendors are prohibited in this zone.The 17 roads are: Mangalagiri Road; GT Road; Etukuru Road; Parchur Road; Ring Road; Amaravati Road; Old Club Road; Railway Station Road; Lakshmipuram Road; Brodiepet 4th, 14th, and 19th lanes; Ashok Nagar Main Road; D.N. Murthy Bungalow Road; Donka Road; Ponnur Road; and Arundelpet 3rd lane.“Further, all street vendors will be given ID cards. A survey is under way to identify them. The vendors can apply for an ID card before June 1. The applications can be submitted in the UPA Cell. The vendors have also been asked to place waste bins,” the Commissioner said.
The areas in the Green zone are: Gaddipadu; Mangaldas Nagar; Arundathi Nagar; Ambedkar Nagar; Vasavi Nagar; Taraka Rama Nagar; Gandhi Colony; RTC Colony; Nehru Nagar; Old Guntur; Vinobha Nagar; Kothapet; Railpet; Gunturvari Thota; Lalapet; Nallacheruvu; Sangadigunta; LR Colony; Srinivasarao Thota; R. Agraharam; KVP Colony; AT Agraharam; NGGO Colony; HB Colony; Syamala Nagar; Pattabhipuram; Chandramouli Nagar; Devapuram; SVN Colony; Krishna Nagar; Navabharath Nagar; Vikas Nagar; Vidya Nagar; Koretipadu; PS Nagar; Bharathpet; and Sarada Colony.
A few areas in Nehru Nagar; Ponnur Road; Narasaraopet Road; Chilakaluripet Road; SVN Colony Road; and Pakalaluru Road have been included in the Amber zone.
