42 minors among 262 arrested on eve-teasing charges in 2 months

VIJAYAWADA : The Mahila Mitra teams (MMT) and city police have intensified their drive to check eve-teasing in the city.


The Mahila Mitra teams were introduced by the city police on January 27. In the last two months, the city police, in association with MMTs, arrested 262 people, including 42 minors, on charges of eve-teasing at various places in the city.


Addressing a media conference here on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) G Pala Raju said that 64 areas were identified as prime spots for eve-teasers in the city. 


Police said most of the alleged eve-teasers were arrested at rush hours. All the persons arrested  on eve-teasing charges have been counselled by the police in association with the Vasavya Mahila Mandali. Later, they were allowed to go in view of the their career and impact on their families. 


Vasavya Mahila Mandali member Keerthi said that in every police station, one MMT would be established with 15 members. All the team members would be given training for creating awareness on various issues. 


Harassment at work places In order to check sexual harassment at offices, hotels, banks and other establishments where 10 or more women were working, the management should constitute an internal committee to check harassments as per the Sexual Harassment at Work Place Act-2013.


The women in the unorganised sector can lodge complaints on sexual harassment to the exclusive committee chaired by the district collector, said Vasavya Mahila Mandali member


Internal committees have been constituted in as many as 100 institutions to check sexual harassment in the city. However, a large number of establishments are yet to form such panels. 


Inspector of Police, Nunna Police Station Sahera Begum was present. 


The police presented 12 alleged eve-teasers before the media, who were caught at PN Bus Stand on Friday evening.
